Parenting Reminders

It’s that time of year where we have so many emotions for our little ones . Whether it’s excitement because the kids are finally back in school and we don’t have little hands in our fridge every five seconds looking for a snack, or the anxiety of how our kids will feel walking into a new classroom with new people.

Maybe we are a little stressed because if you are like me, the school year means we are back into a heavy routine of not only starting our days extremely early, but the hustle and bustle of after school activities , projects , homework assignments , meal prep, and the list goes on.

So, I’m sure one would ask how do we best prepare not only ourselves as parents but our children ? The truth of the matter is, that we are not the only ones filled with emotion. So are our children. They probably have a million different feelings going on and at the end of it all we just want to support them. A few things that I find helpful in remembering are:

1. Ask questions! Sometimes many of our kids don’t have the right words to say nor do they know how to even begin expressing what they feel. If we open up the floor, it provides room for vulnerability, creating a safe space , and gives us as parents, the peace of mind in knowing where our children’s heads are.

2. Cover your kids in prayer. We live in a day in age where unfortunately we may turn on the news and see our children’s school involved in a mass shooting , bullying is prevalent , and access to things are way easier now than when we were all growing up.

3. Set the example and clear expectations at home. Your home is the learning foundation of what they will build on as they go out into the real world filled, which is filled with different types of people, individual views, and standards.

4. Create habits that will cause your children to live out values you instilled and carry with them when you are not around.

5. Create reassuring rituals that can be as simple as reciting morning affirmations with your child when you start your day.

These few things, I believe, are key to preparing your child mentally and spiritually for what’s to come during the year . The biggest thing to remember is, everyone’s system is a little different. Pick up tools here and there but make them your own.

Decide what fits and supports you and your family in being the best you guys can be . I mean look at you , you have already made it through the first month. You may have had a challenging day or week along the way but you made it ! So let’s move into October with a few tools to set our babies up for greatness.
